Aside from the basic tweaks you can do, there is another, lesser known way to optimize your X3100's settings. The basic tweaks apply to all the games, while this advanced method can apply to individual games. This involves registry editing, so this is not for the faint of heart nor for the timid.
I'll be posting more on this soon as I get some screenshots of the steps to take so as to minimize confusion. We will, after all, be modifying the registry so I'd like to be as careful as possible in order to save you from headaches along the way.

wanted to ask that what is the highest graphic setting u are able to run in Red Alert 3 with stable FPS?
do u know anyway to increase performance for RA3? wonder if this registry tweak can do the trick or not..hmm

For sharing, I got my preference setting for Red Alert3 with the best that I can get it is 15-30FPS. With setting:
All low/very low except, texture quality/water detail = medium(which i found much better graphic but just loosing ~5FPS). Fixed the ratio to 1280x720 for sharp graphic as i got a 1440x900 LCD (which returned me another ~5FPS with playable screen resolution).
I just got FRAPS and I'm putting the registry hack to the test on Red Alert 3.
Settings are as follows:
Resolution: 1280 x 800
All settings at their lowest
Running a replay of a game I just played for this purpose.
First run: w/o the tweaks;
Second run: with just the underscore tweaks;
Third run: with just the ~ tweaks;
Fourth run: with both tweaks.
I'll post the results here just to see if it made any difference.
To reiterate, not all solutions will work for all games, each will require a different setup.
BTW, I'm running it at my native resolution so that small changes will have a drastic effect on the FPS.
Okay, just finished the tests.
Here are my framerates for RA3 run at my native resolution of 1280 x800, settings are as follows:
AA: Off
Terrain Detail: Low
Water Detail: Low
Model Detail: Low
Shader Detail: Low
VFX Detail: Lowest
Shadows: Off
Vert. Sync: Off
Texture Quality: High
Average is taken from frames rendered in 3 minutes.
Without any registry mods:
min FR: 15
max FR: 23
ave: 17.978 over 3,236 frames.
With only the "_" entry:
min FR: 14
max FR: 22
ave: 17.089 over 3,076 frames.
With only the "~" entry:
min FR: 15
max FR: 25
ave: 17.383 over 3,129 frames.
With both entries in:
min FR: 14
max FR: 31
ave: 17.778 over 3,200 frames.
Bottomline: having the "_" entry in lowered the framerates on this game, while the "~" entry somehow spiked the max FR, but still gets the average below that of the unmodified registry. Putting both entries in gives an amusing result: max FR spikes to 31 FPS but falls 36 frames short of the unmodified registry setting. Best bet is to put both in since the average is almost the same but at least on certain times you'll get an FPS spike upwards.
Toggling the Texture Detail setting to High only loses ~1FPS so I preferred to lose 1FPS in favor of a better looking game.
If it matters, I also took some time to test this in 800x600 (!) resolution and got an average 30FPS, quite the run-to setting when playing Online/LAN games.
I also tested this on my sister-in-law's HP notebook (DV6000 series) the difference in our specs are that her lappy has the following:
Core2Duo T5450 1.66Ghz processor
2GB 667Mhz System RAM
Guess what? With the more powerful Core2Duo system, there is an average of 5 FPS added to the average. Smoother playability. :)
I'm saving up for a Core2Duo which I'll plunk into this lappy of mine in the future.
